Investment to Expand Pongamia Operations
Terviva, Inc., an agricultural innovation company specializing in pongamia cultivation, has secured an investment from Chevron Renewable Energy Group. This partnership aims to expand Terviva’s pongamia-growing operations and increase the availability of pongamia as a feedstock for renewable fuel production. The collaboration signals Terviva’s strategic growth and its efforts to promote pongamia as a lower carbon resource for biofuels.
High-Yield Feedstock for Renewable Fuels
Over 15 years of research has gone into developing Terviva’s elite pongamia cultivars, which have been tested across nearly 2,000 acres in the U.S. and Australia. Pongamia trees produce beans with high oil content, yielding three or more metric tons per acre. These beans are processed to extract crude pongamia oil, which can be used as a feedstock for biofuels such as biodiesel, renewable diesel, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The crop’s high oil yield and low input requirements help reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels.
Naveen Sikka, founder and CEO of Terviva, emphasized the benefits of the partnership: “By working with Chevron Renewable Energy Group, we can increase the availability of feedstocks for renewable fuel production while promoting our mission to revitalize agricultural land and communities.”
Pongamia’s Environmental and Economic Impact
As a regenerative crop, pongamia offers resilience, surviving with limited water access and tolerating extreme heat. Its nitrogen-fixing properties improve soil health, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers. Terviva’s pongamia cultivation not only supports renewable fuel production but also revitalizes agricultural land, creating economic opportunities for farmers.
Jan Slaghekke, Vice President of Business Development and International Operations at Chevron Renewable Energy Group, highlighted the significance of the partnership: “Increasing the availability of lower carbon feedstocks for renewable fuels production is essential for the biofuels industry’s growth.”
