Key Takeaways:
- Rumin8, an Australian climate tech company, receives approval from Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture for its methane-reducing feed additive.
- The approval enables Rumin8 to begin safety and efficacy studies in Brazil’s commercial cattle sector.
- Brazil, with the world’s largest cattle herd, represents a significant market for Rumin8’s product.
- The methane-reducing feed additive is based on the organic compound Tribromomethane (TBM), proven effective in reducing livestock methane emissions.
Rumin8’s Methane-Reducing Additive Approved in Brazil
Rumin8, an Australian climate technology company, has achieved a major milestone in its efforts to commercialize its methane-reducing feed additives by securing regulatory approval from Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply. This approval positions Rumin8 closer to offering its innovative solution to the largest cattle population in the world.
This regulatory approval follows a provisional authorization granted in New Zealand in late July. Rumin8 is rapidly accumulating the regulatory authorizations required to advance its methane-reducing products globally.
CEO’s Perspective
Rumin8 CEO, David Messina, expressed confidence in the company’s regulatory progress. “Two regulatory authorities have now assessed the safety data of our products, and both have allowed us to proceed through an important regulatory gateway. That provides Rumin8 with confidence that we are on the right pathway,” Messina said.
Focus on Tribromomethane (TBM) for Methane Reduction
Rumin8’s feed additives are based on an organic active compound known as Tribromomethane (TBM), which has demonstrated superior methane reduction capabilities compared to other tested compounds. The company’s innovative process synthesizes and stabilizes TBM using a scalable and cost-effective pharmaceutical-grade manufacturing technique, ensuring consistency and high quality.
With Brazil’s approval, Rumin8 can now advance its efficacy and safety studies on commercial cattle to gather the necessary data for full regulatory approval in the country.
Importance of the Brazilian Market
Brazil has the largest cattle herd globally, with nearly 235 million head, significantly larger than the U.S. herd at around 95 million and Australia’s at 30 million. This massive market represents a key opportunity for Rumin8 both in terms of sales and impact on methane reduction.
“Brazil is a key market for Rumin8 for two reasons,” said Messina. “Its large beef cattle population means we can generate significant sales when we commercialize, and we can make a significant impact on reducing methane emissions – which is a key driver for Rumin8 and our shareholders.”
Sustainable Beef Production and Positive Trial Results
Rumin8’s methane-reducing additive aligns with Brazil’s need for sustainable practices in beef production, helping the country maintain its position as a leading global beef exporter while addressing environmental concerns. Messina highlighted that “Adopting sustainable practices in beef production, while maintaining or boosting productivity, is particularly important in Brazil.”
Recent trials conducted by independent researchers in Australia, the United States, and Brazil have yielded promising results. These trials, funded by Rumin8, showed reductions in methane emissions of up to 86%, with weight gains in cattle ranging from 8.4% to 12.5% higher than control groups fed the same base ration.
Recognized for Climate Technology
Rumin8 was recently named one of the 15 Climate Tech companies to watch by the MIT Technology Review.
