Green Plains Inc. Advances Carbon Capture Initiative at Nebraska Facilities
Green Plains Inc. (NASDAQ) today announced significant progress in its carbon capture initiative with the execution of construction management agreements and the ordering of major equipment necessary for capturing carbon at its Nebraska facilities. These milestones position the company to commence construction in the second half of 2024, and to begin capturing the biogenic carbon dioxide associated with the production of 287 million gallons of ethanol annually beginning in the second half of 2025.
Carbon Capture Equipment and Installation
The carbon capture equipment will be installed at Green Plains’ Central City, Wood River, and York, Nebraska locations. This equipment has been designed to accommodate potential post-combustion carbon capture and increased production, with an overall carbon capture capacity of up to 1.2 million tons.
“We are at the forefront of producing millions of gallons of low carbon-intensity ethanol, and we remain on track to participate in the early days of the Clean Fuel Production Credit and low carbon fuel markets, in addition to producing high-quality carbon credits,” said Todd Becker, President and CEO of Green Plains. “By capturing our biogenic carbon dioxide from fermentation, we are demonstrating our commitment to sustainable production practices and our dedication to positively impacting the communities we serve.”
Impact on Biofuel and Co-Products
Once operational, the carbon capture initiative is expected to reduce the carbon intensity of Green Plains’ biofuel by half. This positions the company to become one of the largest producers of low carbon-intensity feedstock for the commercial production of sustainable aviation fuel. Additionally, the initiative is anticipated to positively impact the high-quality ingredients such as Ultra High Protein, Sequence™, and renewable corn oil produced at the Nebraska biorefineries, further enhancing the entire portfolio.
Financing and Project Development
Green Plains has secured the necessary construction agreements and applicable financing arrangements to facilitate the ordering of the carbon sequestration equipment. The Trailblazer project, a key component of this initiative, continues to make significant progress. Once operational, the project is expected to safely transport captured biogenic carbon dioxide from several Nebraska ethanol facilities to sequestration wells in Wyoming for permanent geologic storage.
Commitment to Sustainability
“By capturing our biogenic carbon dioxide from fermentation, we are demonstrating our commitment to sustainable production practices and our dedication to positively impacting the communities we serve,” said Becker. The reduction in carbon intensity not only supports Green Plains’ environmental goals but also enhances its competitive edge in producing low carbon-intensity feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel.
